Activity Summary

EOG Resources Australia Block WA-488 Pty Ltd ("EOG") is the titleholder of permit WA-488-P, located in Commonwealth waters of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf off the northern Western Australian (WA) coastline.

EOG proposes to drill up to three exploration or appraisal wells in WA-488-P that may be drilled via multiple drilling campaigns, with each well construction subject to the success of the prior well. The permit area is situated in water depths ranging from 40 m to 50 m and located a minimum of 77 km off the WA coastline and around 300 km southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The activity is planned to occur anytime within a five-year window commencing no earlier than January 2025 and will be completed no later than December 2029. Each well construction activity is expected to take between 55 and 150 days. Activities are expected to be conducted 24 hours per day, 7 days per week using a jack-up mobile offshore drilling unit (“MODU”). Timing and duration of these activities is subject to change, including due to campaign schedule requirements, MODU and vessel availability, weather, and unforeseen circumstances. A 500 m Petroleum Safety Zone will be established around each well for the duration of each drilling activity.

The following activities are included in the Multi-Well Drilling Environmental Plan:

  • Movement of the MODU within the permit area, position MODU, pre-load and jack-up to operational elevation;
  • MODU and vessel commissioning and demobilizing activities;
  • Drilling and well construction activities;
  • Well evaluation activities (wireline logging, sidewall cores, formation testing, vertical seismic profiling, possibly a geologic sidetrack to obtain whole core or drill stem test [DST]);
  • Plug and permanent or temporary abandonment of each well;
  • Contingency activities such as side-track drilling, re-drilling sections, re-spud and abandonment.

Each well will be drilled directionally to target formations, with a total depth up to 6,000 m using water based and synthetic oil-based drill fluids. Well evaluation is planned if the well successfully finds hydrocarbon pay in the target formation(s). The MODU will be supported by three marine vessels used to transport equipment to and from the MODU. Helicopters will primarily be used for crew changes several times per week and assist during emergency events.

The full description of the MW Drilling Program will be available in the Environment Plan ("EP") once published.
